Federal Reserve
The Federal Reserve is the central bank of the United States, charged by Congress with pursuing maximum employment and stable prices. Its principal lever is the federal funds rate, the overnight rate at which banks lend to each other, and changes to it ripple outward into every borrowing cost in the economy and every discount rate in finance.
The math
Trace one policy move through one balance sheet. A company carries $2 billion of floating rate debt.
The policy rate rises 2 percentage points, and the company’s interest expense climbs by $40 million a year. Spread across 100 million shares, that is $0.40 shaved off earnings per share; at a 20 times multiple, roughly $8 of fair value per share.

On a $60 stock, a policy decision taken in Washington just removed about 13 percent of the equity’s value before a single customer changed behavior. Companies with fixed rate debt and distant maturities feel almost none of this; the difference is visible in any 10-K.
The trap
Trading the meetings. Eight times a year, investors position for the announcement, yet markets reprice policy expectations continuously in the weeks before, so the decision itself is usually old news within minutes.
Guessing the statement’s tone against professionals who do nothing else is a coin flip with commissions, and the whipsaw around press conferences punishes conviction in both directions.
The move
Read Fed policy for what it does to your holdings, not for timing. Check each company’s floating versus fixed debt mix, its refinancing calendar, and whether its customers buy with borrowed money.
Then let meeting days pass unwatched. A durable business bought at a sensible price does not need the next quarter point to go its way, and a portfolio that does need it holds the wrong companies.
